Hey everyone, if you are wondering who is behind “Mister Nano Reef”, why I started all of this and what is the goal of this website, here’s a bit more information about me.
I’m Stijn, from Belgium, and since 4 years I can call myself a passionate reefer. I’ve always had a fascination for the underwater world. Not really living in an exotic environment, every chance I get, I like to spend holidays near the ocean or better said… IN it! The seemingly unexplored world, the joy of silence under water and the big mystery still surrounding our oceans… what is not to love!?
The Mister Nano Reef story
4 years ago, my girlfriend and me were on a roundtrip in Mauritius and she had the (at that moment we thought innocent, but great) idea to pick up some shells and washed up coral skeletons from the beach to take it home and set up a basic aquarium with it. What I didn’t know at the time, was that this isn’t allowed so if any Mauritian people read this, I am sorry and I hope we are still allowed into your beautiful country. 🙂
Anyways, the basic idea was to set up a small tank with a goldfish and these clams and coral skeletons. At least that was the idea in my girlfriends head. From the moment we walked into the local fish store, my dreamy mind started building coral reefs and cavelike structures… aaaand that is basically what we ended up with.
As it was very difficult for me to find a good step by step guide on how to start a nano reef (we kept it small), I decided to document every day on Instagram from the very beginning and that’s what I am still doing up to this day.

Over time, I’ve been getting more and more questions from people asking for help and it became clear that I needed a place to put the answers to most of the recurring questions. So… misternanoreef.com was born!
My next goal is to make this a place where you can find all the info you need to start your own (nano) reef/saltwater aquarium. I also just released The Nano Reef Blueprint by Mister Nano Reef – a 100% transparent guide on everything I ever did or still do on my tank to set it up & make it thrive.
